NYPD Emergency Services Unit Detective Shot During Brooklyn Barricade Standoff; Suspect Killed

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

On June 19, 2026, New York Police Department (NYPD) Emergency Service Unit (ESU) Detective Matthew Gale was shot in the left leg during a barricade standoff in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. The suspect, Lamin Simmons, 48, fired approximately 20 rounds at officers before being fatally shot after he refused to disarm.

ANALYSIS

Officers from the 79th Precinct responded at approximately 5:45 a.m. to a 911 call reporting multiple gunshots fired inside a two-story home on Kosciuszko Street between Marcy and Tompkins avenues. Patrol officers entered the apartment, encountered Simmons armed with a firearm, and retreated to the exterior before requesting ESU support.

Gale, a 15-year NYPD veteran, was struck in the left leg and sustained a tibial fracture. He was transported to Kings County Hospital in stable condition and is expected to require surgery. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited the officer, reported he was in good spirits, and stated he would be hospitalized for several days.

Simmons fired approximately 20 rounds during the standoff. After he refused repeated commands to disarm, at least four officers returned fire, striking Simmons multiple times. He was transported to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No additional officers or bystanders were injured.

No motive or organizational nexus has been identified.
