The bombing itself, an attack by a fired former bartender named Bruce Valentine Whitman using a Nissan Rogue loaded with 20 propane tanks and approximately 10 improvised explosive devices, was characterized by Portland Police and the FBI as a personal grievance suicide attack rather than ideologically motivated. The anarchist publication treats it operationally as adjacent to the April 7 Kimberly-Clark warehouse arson in Ontario California, the April 10 firebombing of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's residence gate, and the April 25 White House Correspondents Dinner attempted attack.

Whitman drove the vehicle through the ground floor glass of the 135-year-old MAC building at approximately 3 AM on May 2. Most of the IEDs failed to detonate; Portland Police bomb squad recovered live devices for hours after the fire was suppressed. Whitman died in the burning vehicle. No members, staff, or guests were injured. MAC reported damage as significant but contained and announced a reopening within weeks.
The Puget Sound Anarchists essay does not claim Whitman as an anarchist. Common features across the cited cases include solo or near-solo execution, named ideological or grievance-driven motive, use of accessible improvised tools (vehicle, propane, Molotov, small explosive devices), and targeting of either corporate executives or symbolic institutional infrastructure. None of the cited attacks involved coordinated multi-cell operational planning. All four ended in arrest or death of the attacker; no follow-on attacks by the same cell have been documented.
Concurrent with the Portland MAC reframing, the same essay describes the May 1 sit-in at the Hilton-owned Porter Portland hotel by Sunrise Movement PDX over the hotel's housing of ICE, Border Patrol, and DHS personnel. Eight participants were arrested. Sunrise Movement PDX is also facing lawfare actions over nighttime noise demos targeting hotels housing federal agents.
