EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
A 39-year-old man killed five people across three locations in Missaukee County, Michigan on August 14 before being found dead in a wooded area after a large-scale law enforcement search. A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition, and the suspect, Chad Hickman, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
ANALYSIS
Michigan State Police troopers responded around midday on August 14 to a shooting at a home on South LaChance Road in Lake Township, where they found three people dead and a 13-year-old girl critically wounded. Hickman had fled before officers arrived, and the girl was transported to a hospital. As a large-scale search got underway, investigators found a fourth victim dead at a second residence in the county.
Hickman's vehicle was discovered in a wooded area near Whitlock Lake, where officers also found Hickman dead alongside a fifth victim. The sequence of three scenes across two homes and a remote woodland location suggests Hickman knew at least some of his victims and targeted specific locations rather than carrying out a random public attack. The names of the victims were withheld pending family notification as of August 15.
Records show Hickman had a troubled prior history. He was convicted of misdemeanor fourth-degree child abuse in 2024 and sentenced to one year in jail. Felony assault and sexual misconduct charges filed around the same period were subsequently dismissed. Whether Hickman had prior contact with any of the victims or with law enforcement in the weeks preceding the shooting has not been established publicly.
Michigan State Police Lt. Ashley Miller said investigators would work through the night to process each of the three scenes, describing the situation as "heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators." Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she was briefed and monitoring. No additional suspects have been identified and no ideological motive has been established.
