EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
An anonymous anarchist cell published a communique on August 21 claiming responsibility for sawing through a 400,000-volt power transmission pylon that supplies the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) research center at Cadarache in Bouches-du-Rhone, southern France. The attack occurred on the night of May 17, 2026. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), the world's largest nuclear fusion project with US Department of Energy participation, is located on the same site.
ANALYSIS
The attackers severed one of two 400kV transmission pylons delivering power to the CEA Cadarache facility. The communique states the cell deliberately left the second pylon intact to avoid triggering an accident, noting that the site also has an auxiliary hydroelectric power source. No short circuit occurred. French authorities have not publicly confirmed the attack, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
Cadarache hosts the ITER project, a nuclear fusion research facility jointly funded by the United States, the European Union, China, India, Japan, Russia, and South Korea. The US Department of Energy contributes approximately nine percent of the project's total cost. The facility is in an active construction and commissioning phase expected to run through at least 2027. Repeated power disruptions during active commissioning could stress sensitive superconducting magnet systems and other components not designed for cycling interruptions.
The communique's publication three months after the attack follows a documented pattern in the French radical milieu: cells wait weeks or months before claiming operations, sometimes after confirming the attack was not publicly attributed. The selection of a 400kV pylon rather than lower-voltage infrastructure reflects site-specific technical knowledge. The attackers demonstrated awareness of the facility's two-line power architecture and where a single-line disruption would and would not cause cascading failures.
This is the second confirmed infrastructure sabotage targeting French nuclear energy infrastructure in 2026. A separate anonymous cell claimed a second attack on a Vinci construction site in Bouchemaine, Maine-et-Loire, contracted for new reactor construction, in a communique published August 10. Together the two incidents establish an active network willing to act against both operational nuclear research facilities and new nuclear construction projects.
