EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office and the FBI arrested a 15-year-old Gainesville, Florida resident identified as Jude Sleeper on or around October 26, 2026, on a charge of making or attempting to make a destructive device. Investigators say Sleeper was in online contact with Islamic State members and supporters and sought their guidance on building explosive-armed drones and TATP for use against an unidentified indoor target.

ANALYSIS

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office, working with the FBI, initiated the investigation after receiving information about the suspect's online activity. Deputies went to his northwest Gainesville home, where his mother directed them to two jars in his bedroom that Sleeper told investigators contained chemicals used to produce TATP, a highly volatile and shock-sensitive primary explosive used in numerous terrorist attacks internationally. The bomb team evacuated the home and secured the materials. Investigators also found bomb-making files and Islamic State propaganda on his phone.

Sleeper reportedly communicated over social media with individuals who presented themselves as Islamic State members or sympathizers and asked them for technical guidance on building explosive-armed drones and fabricating explosives for deployment at an indoor location not publicly identified by authorities. His interest in drones as delivery systems for improvised explosive devices fits a documented pattern in ISIS-linked attack planning: the group promoted drone-based IED employment in its media since at least 2019, and several Western arrests in the past two years involved suspects who tried to acquire or build drone delivery systems for explosives. Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.

The age of the suspect raises specific officer safety and threat-assessment concerns for law enforcement. Juvenile subjects pursuing operational attack planning represent an increasingly documented subset of domestic ISIS-inspired cases.
