EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
A chemical explosion early on August 27 at a marijuana extraction facility in Sand Springs, Oklahoma killed two people and damaged dozens of businesses. ANALYSIS
The explosion occurred around 1:00 AM August 27 at a building in the Morrow Gill Business Complex in Sand Springs, a Tulsa suburb. One person died at the scene. A second victim reached the hospital in critical condition and died there. The explosion damaged at least 25 neighboring businesses in the commercial complex.
Investigators attributed the blast to the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) extraction process underway at the facility. Hydrocarbon-based extraction using butane or similar solvents is a recognized high-risk process; enclosed and unventilated spaces concentrate flammable vapor, and ignition during active processing can produce catastrophic overpressure. The blast radius and structural damage to surrounding businesses indicate significant solvent quantities were on-site.
Bassham was charged with two counts of first-degree murder on August 28, and a warrant was issued the same day. The OSBI is conducting the investigation jointly with the ATF. As of August 29, Bassham had not been confirmed in custody. Prosecutors chose first-degree murder rather than manslaughter, which signals an intent to argue that Bassham's conduct constituted knowing endangerment of others meeting Oklahoma's statutory definition of first-degree murder absent premeditation.
