ANALYSIS

On October 19, the FBI flagged threatening social media posts targeting Cherokee High School to Cherokee County School District police. The district contacted Canton Police Department, which opened an investigation the same day. Within 24 hours, detectives identified a juvenile Canton resident connected to the posts and arrested that individual October 20 on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and disruption of a public school.

As the investigation continued, police identified two additional suspects. Shane Keith Taylor, 17, was arrested October 23 and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. He was booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center. Michael Brandon Terry, 21, of Chatsworth, California, was arrested by the FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department. Terry faces a single count of conspiracy to commit murder and is awaiting transport to Cherokee County.

Canton Police Chief Marty Ferrell confirmed no ongoing threat to Cherokee High School or any other Cherokee County school. The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact Canton Police at 770-720-4883 or submit a tip to the FBI.

The three suspects span a juvenile, a 17-year-old, and a 21-year-old adult in California, a range that goes beyond a typical peer group at one school.
