ANALYSIS
Shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Fort Worth Police Department officers responded to a shooting in the 5900 block of Wilbarger Street, where a large group had gathered at a car wash location to watch fireworks and celebrate the holiday. A physical confrontation between two men escalated when one produced a rifle and began firing into the crowd. The weapon was identified as a .300 blackout caliber rifle, a round capable of inflicting severe wounds at close range and designed for platforms similar in profile to a standard-issue military rifle.
Among those struck were Ivy Pierce, one year old, and her sister Wynter Thouston, four years old, both of whom were pronounced dead in the emergency room. A 42-year-old man also died from his wounds. Five additional bystanders were wounded, and court records indicate none of them had any connection to the dispute that started the shooting. The mother of the two girls later spoke publicly, making clear the children had no part in any confrontation at the event.
Police identified and charged one suspect with capital murder. The second man involved in the original confrontation also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Fort Worth homicide detectives described the mass casualty element as the result of deliberate, indiscriminate fire into a crowd rather than an attempt to target any specific bystander. No additional suspects have been named publicly and the investigation is ongoing.
