A pre-dawn shooting in south Wichita left one person in critical condition early Thursday, prompting activation of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams and crisis negotiators at a residential address in the 1500 block of South Pattie; drone technology was deployed mid-morning to communicate with a suspect believed to be barricaded inside.
ANALYSIS
Wichita police responded to a shooting at the 1500 block of South Pattie before 5 a.m. on July 9. One victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. A suspect was believed to have retreated inside a nearby structure following the shooting and remained there as of mid-morning. No additional victims or hostages were reported.
Wichita Police Department activated SWAT and Crisis Negotiators to manage the barricade. At 11:08 a.m., officers introduced a drone into the residence to establish direct communication with the suspect and encourage peaceful surrender. Police established a perimeter from Harry to Boston Street with through-traffic blocked on Lulu, Pattie, and Laura streets. Some residents within the cordon were evacuated; others received instructions to shelter in place and call 911 if they required emergency assistance.
The standoff remained active with no resolution reported as of late morning on July 9. The motivation for the initial shooting and any relationship between the suspect and the victim were not publicly disclosed. Police did not release suspect information during the active barricade.
